Bandage of Love
2022
This zine’s title, Bandage of Love, gains its namesake from the second chapter of Homes of The Freed by Rossa Belle Cooley (1873), a book discussing the homes and lives of freedmen in the Carolinas. The “Bandage” refers to the crafts taken up by African Americans in the post- Civil War South such as knitting, quilting, indigo dyeing, basket weaving, and other what we would consider folk arts, that served the purpose of helping to heal some of the wounds inflicted by enslavement. One of the pivotal empowerments that resulted from these developments was the emergence of the Black Southern artistic voice and specific visual canon. All of the contents of this zine are examples of this “bandage”.
